Local resident has been sentenced to 8 years in prison for wire fraud scheme

Shreveport, LA – According to the court documents, her name is Monica Ruiz and she pleaded guilty to wire fraud on March 24.

Prosecutors say the 45-year-old woman was sentenced to 97 months in prison on Tuesday.

According to the court documents, the defendant often impersonated other people in communications with the victim.

She also created and used fake personas in communications with the victim.

Prosecutors say the defendant obtained more than $4.85 million from the victim.

Ruiz was indicted by a federal grand jury on Nov. 19, 2020.
