Lafayette, LA — As freezing temperatures make their way through Acadiana, Lafayette Consolidated Government has opened a warming shelter to support individuals experiencing homelessness or those without adequate heating in their homes.
The shelter is located at the Dupuis Recreation Center at Brown Park, 1234 E. Pont Des Mouton Rd., and opened its doors at 6 p.m. on January 5. It will remain operational through January 10, with the shelter closing when temperatures are forecasted to rise above freezing.
To ensure those in need can access the shelter, transportation is available. Individuals can go directly to the shelter or can receive a ride from St. Joseph Diner, located at 613 W. Simcoe St.
The temporary shelter aims to provide a safe, warm space for those most vulnerable to the cold weather, as the region experiences a significant drop in temperatures. The initiative reflects the community’s ongoing efforts to support its residents during extreme weather events.
Lafayette Consolidated Government is urging anyone in need to take advantage of the shelter and transportation services available during this severe cold spell.
