Louisiana State Police Urges Caution as Winter Weather Threatens State

by Lina Tarson

BATON ROUGE, La. — As extreme winter weather conditions are expected to impact Louisiana over the next few days, the Louisiana State Police (LSP) is urging both residents and visitors to stay weather-aware and avoid unnecessary travel.

With roadways likely to deteriorate quickly, particularly bridges and overpasses, the LSP is advising motorists to exercise caution and remain off the roads unless travel is essential. In collaboration with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD), the State Police will be closely monitoring roadway conditions and taking necessary steps to close roads for safety. However, LSP emphasized that it is everyone’s responsibility to prioritize safety by staying home if possible.

For those who must travel, LSP has provided several crucial safety tips to help drivers navigate the hazardous conditions:

  • Slow Down: Drivers are advised to reduce speed and allow extra time to reach their destinations. This is especially important in icy conditions, where stopping distances increase.
  • Increase Following Distance: Maintaining more space between vehicles will allow for greater reaction time in the event of sudden stops or icy patches.
  • Avoid Cruise Control: Under icy or wet conditions, cruise control should be turned off, as it can make it more difficult to regain control of the vehicle if the wheels begin to slip.
  • Brake Gently: Drivers should anticipate stops well in advance and apply brakes gently to avoid losing traction on slippery roads.
  • Watch for Ice: Overpasses, bridges, and areas shaded by trees are particularly prone to icy patches. Drivers should be vigilant and aware of these hazards.
  • Skid Safety: In the event of a skid, motorists are advised to take their foot off the accelerator and steer gently into the skid to regain control of the vehicle.
  • Use Low-Beam Headlights: Low-beam headlights should be used for better visibility in inclement weather.
  • Be Aware of Slow-Moving Vehicles: Drivers should also remain alert for slow-moving DOTD vehicles and emergency responders working on the roads.

Additionally, LSP reminded the public that it is both illegal and unsafe to drive around road barricades, which are in place to protect drivers from hazardous conditions.

LSP further stressed the importance of ensuring that all vehicle occupants are properly restrained, as seat belts remain one of the simplest yet most effective safety measures.

As the winter weather event progresses, Louisiana State Police encourages everyone to remain cautious and stay updated on current conditions. By adhering to these safety tips, drivers can help ensure their own safety and the safety of others on the road.
