Bronze Plaques Stolen from Veterans’ Graves Found Damaged Beyond Repair in New Iberia

by Lina Tarson

NEW IBERIA, La. – Authorities have confirmed that several bronze plaques, stolen from the gravesites of military veterans at Holy Family Cemetery in New Iberia, were located, but have been destroyed beyond repair. The Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office announced the discovery in a Facebook post, revealing that the plaques had been damaged to the point where they could not be returned to their original condition.

The stolen plaques, which served as memorials to fallen military veterans, were reportedly found in pieces, with the names of the veterans ground off using a grinder. The authorities stated that the individuals responsible for the theft and subsequent destruction of the plaques have been arrested. However, the damage done to the items makes it impossible for them to be restored and placed back at their rightful gravesites.

“This heartbreaking act has caused significant emotional distress for the community, and we are committed to seeking justice for this senseless crime,” the Sheriff’s Office wrote in its post. “The damaged pieces are being held as evidence as part of the ongoing investigation.”

The incident has sparked outrage among residents and veterans’ families, who expressed their dismay over the destruction of what were meant to be enduring tributes to their loved ones’ service and sacrifice. The Sheriff’s Office has reassured the public that the investigation is ongoing and that they are working to ensure those responsible are held accountable.

While the plaques cannot be restored, authorities have vowed to continue pursuing justice, and efforts will be made to prevent further acts of vandalism at local cemeteries.
