Opelousas Begins Major Renovation of Donald Gardner Stadium

by Lina Tarson

OPLOUSAS, LA — Significant changes are underway at Donald Gardner Stadium as crews begin a major renovation project that has been in the works for years. The $7.5 million revitalization effort, which includes a two-phase plan, aims to transform the stadium into a state-of-the-art facility for the Opelousas community.

Lena Charles, chairwoman of the Opelousas Downtown Development District, explained that the project has been part of long-term planning efforts for the area. “This project has been in development long before 2023,” said Charles. “We’ve been planning this for a while.” The renovation is not only about improving the stadium but also instilling a sense of pride in the city and its residents.

“This project is about revitalizing our city and our district,” Charles continued. “A lot of pride is building up in the community.”

Construction is already underway at the stadium, with crews clearing the area, removing old structures, and preparing for the upcoming changes. Among the major upgrades planned are a new track, fresh turf, refurbished stands, improved lighting, additional bathrooms, and a new parking lot. Concession stands are also slated for improvement, creating a more modern and accessible experience for visitors.

Julius Alsandor, Mayor of Opelousas, expressed excitement about the positive impact the project will have on the community. “This park is something we will all be proud of,” said Alsandor, adding that the updates will include improved stands, new lighting, and a brand-new field.

For local high school students, the renovation comes as a welcome change. Collin Rideau, a football player at Opelousas High School, shared his enthusiasm about the improvements. “This will be different because we’ll have what the other schools have,” Rideau said. “We won’t have to worry about playing in poor conditions. This will be better.”

In addition to the stadium renovations, the city is also working on a new South City Park Recreational Center. This $2.5 million facility will offer new recreational opportunities for residents of all ages.

“The new stadium and recreational center are investments in our community,” said Mayor Alsandor. “You will see a bunch of excited Opelousians in that stadium, and you’ll see their tax dollars at work.”

The city and the Opelousas Downtown Development District are set to host a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, February 26, at 10 a.m. at Donald Gardner Stadium. The event marks the official start of the renovation project, which promises to be a significant milestone for the city of Opelousas.

The improvements are expected to make the stadium and its surrounding facilities a source of pride for residents, providing a modern and vibrant space for sports, recreation, and community events for years to come.
