LAFAYETTE, LA — The 37th annual Festival International de Louisiane opened Thursday evening, drawing large crowds to the streets of downtown Lafayette for a lively celebration of music, culture, and cuisine. Despite a brief morning rainstorm that caused temporary flooding in parts of Acadiana, the festival’s opening night was met with clear skies and an energetic atmosphere, setting the tone for what promises to be an unforgettable five-day event.
Festivalgoers from near and far flocked to the city for the occasion, with many traveling from across the United States to experience the festival’s vibrant international lineup and local flavor. Matt Kroschel, a visitor from Colorado, expressed his excitement for the weekend ahead. “I’ve heard so many good things about all the music—and of course the food,” he said, eagerly anticipating the chance to enjoy some traditional Louisiana seafood. “I’ve been craving crawfish, so we’re definitely having a boil.”
Now one of the largest outdoor music festivals in the country, Festival International attracts more than 300,000 visitors each year, generating approximately $49 million in economic impact for the Lafayette area. As the event unfolds, local businesses are already seeing the benefits. Ross Fontenot, owner of Genterie Supply Co. in downtown Lafayette, reported an uptick in foot traffic and a palpable sense of excitement among festivalgoers. “It’s a good time for business, but I get to enjoy it myself, too,” Fontenot said. “The general vibe and feeling is really good. People are always in a great mood, so it’s a fun one.”
The festival’s five stages across downtown showcase a diverse array of musical performances, featuring artists from across the globe, including Morocco, France, Jamaica, Haiti, Niger, and Mexico. Local Louisiana talent is also heavily represented, adding a familiar flavor to the international mix. The festival has become a beloved tradition for both locals and visitors, and this year’s lineup promises to deliver another unforgettable celebration of cultural exchange.
In addition to the musical performances, the event offers a wide range of activities for all ages, including food vendors, art installations, and family-friendly programming. As the festival continues through the weekend, it serves as a testament to Lafayette’s unique blend of international influences and local pride—a vibrant reflection of the city’s rich cultural heritage.
As the streets fill with music, food, and laughter, it’s clear that Festival International de Louisiane remains a cornerstone of the city’s cultural identity and a major draw for visitors from around the world.
