LAFAYETTE, La. — As the 39th Festival International de Louisiane kicks off this weekend, festival-goers are not only in for a treat with music, food, and culture, but they can also rest easy knowing their health is in good hands. Ochsner Lafayette General has set up an on-site medical tent to provide vital services for attendees throughout the festival.
The medical tent, located on Jefferson Street across from the Scène Ochsner Lafayette General Fais Do Do stage, will be staffed with local nurses and healthcare professionals ready to offer first aid, hydration, over-the-counter medications, and eye wash, among other services. For more serious situations, the tent is equipped with a cardiac monitor and a defibrillator, ensuring quick response to emergencies.
“We’ve seen firsthand the importance of having immediate medical care available at large-scale events like this,” said Shamir Hasan, the medical tent director and a nephrologist. Hasan reflected on a medical crisis during the 2023 festival where a festival-goer suffered from dehydration. “Being able to provide IV hydration on-site in moments like that can make a significant difference in outcomes,” he said.
The medical tent isn’t just focused on internal health; the tent will also feature a Free SPF station offering sunscreen and hand sanitizer to protect attendees from the elements and prevent sunburn during the outdoor festivities.
In addition to the medical staff, Acadian Ambulance will be on standby to transport high-risk patients to nearby hospitals if necessary, ensuring a quick response to more serious health concerns.
The presence of the medical tent and resources like the Free SPF station emphasizes the festival’s commitment to the safety and well-being of the community. With so much to enjoy at the event, attendees can now focus on celebrating, knowing that help is nearby if needed.
