LAFAYETTE PARISH, LA — Residents of Lafayette Parish are being urged to prepare for severe weather conditions set to impact the area starting Tuesday afternoon and continuing through Thursday morning. A flash flood watch has been issued, with forecasts predicting 4 to 8 inches of rain, strong winds, large hail, and a heightened risk of localized flash flooding. Some areas could experience up to 10 inches of rain, according to local meteorologists.
The Lafayette Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (OHSEP) is actively monitoring the situation, coordinating with local agencies and emergency responders to ensure public safety. Christina Dayries, chief of staff with the Lafayette Consolidated Government, emphasized the importance of early preparation as the region braces for severe weather.
“Current national weather forecasts place Lafayette at the heart of the most severe weather,” Dayries said. “We’re looking at 6 to 8 inches of rain, and some isolated areas could see up to 12 inches. This will be a slow-moving event, which is one of the most concerning aspects of the storm.”
Flash flooding remains the primary concern for local officials, who are urging citizens and businesses to take action before the rain begins. The storm’s slow movement could lead to significant water accumulation, putting areas already prone to flooding at higher risk.
Lafayette Parish’s drainage system, which faced scrutiny after recent flooding from just a few hours of rainfall, has been a focus of attention in the lead-up to the storm. Brian Smith, director of drainage for Lafayette Consolidated Government, reassured the public that measures have been taken to ensure the system is ready to handle the expected rainfall.
“We have a robust system for clearing our ditches,” Smith said. “Before any storm, we go out and check our systems to make sure everything is clear and can properly convey water. Any debris accumulation is promptly removed to prevent blockages.”
Business owners in Lafayette Parish are also being urged to take precautionary measures ahead of the storm, including securing sandbags available at select locations. City officials have advised residents to secure important documents and prepare their homes for possible flooding.
