Accidental Shooting in New Iberia Leaves One Injured, Investigation Underway

New Iberia, LA — Authorities are investigating an accidental shooting that left one person injured Tuesday evening in New Iberia.

According to the New Iberia Police Department, officers were called to the 900 block of Mississippi Street shortly before 5 p.m. after receiving reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, law enforcement officials discovered a victim suffering from a single gunshot wound.

The victim, whose identity and condition have not been released, was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment. As of now, their condition remains unknown.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the incident occurred inside a residence when an individual mishandled a firearm, causing it to discharge and strike the victim. Police have confirmed that the person involved in the incident has been detained for questioning.

Detectives with the New Iberia Police Department are currently leading the investigation, which remains active. Authorities have not provided further details but are urging anyone with information related to the shooting to contact the New Iberia Police Department.
