LAFAYETTE, La. — A candle left unattended sparked a townhouse fire in Lafayette on Friday evening, causing significant damage to an upstairs bedroom.
Around 6 p.m. on Friday, Lafayette firefighters responded to a residential fire in a townhouse located on the 2800 block of Louisiana Avenue. Upon arrival, responders observed smoke emanating from the two-story structure. The resident of the townhouse informed the firefighters that the fire had started in an upstairs bedroom.
Firefighters quickly worked to contain the flames, which were primarily confined to the bedroom, preventing the fire from spreading to other parts of the townhouse. Despite their efforts, the bedroom sustained heavy fire damage.
Fire officials conducted an investigation and determined that the fire originated from a bed in the bedroom, ignited by an unattended candle. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the damage was contained to the single townhouse.
The fire has been ruled accidental, and authorities are urging residents to take precautions when using candles to avoid similar incidents in the future.
