ST. LANDRY PARISH, LA — A St. Landry Parish deputy remains hospitalized after being struck by a suspect’s vehicle during an undercover narcotics operation Thursday afternoon, prompting an active manhunt for the suspect.
The incident occurred around 4 p.m. at a Dollar General store located off Highway 182 near Sunset. According to Sheriff Bobby Guidroz, deputies were conducting a sting operation when the suspect, identified as 27-year-old Justin Miller of Sunset, attempted to flee after realizing the nature of the operation.
Deputies say Miller struck an undercover deputy—estimated to be in his early 20s—and the deputy’s patrol vehicle with his car before leading officers on a brief chase. The injured deputy suffered a hip or leg injury, possibly broken or dislocated, but is expected to recover.
Following the chase, Miller abandoned his vehicle, which contained his girlfriend and four children. All were reported safe and unharmed. Authorities believe Miller fled west toward Sunset and into a nearby wooded area.
Sheriff Guidroz confirmed Miller has a criminal history including prior arrests for drug and weapons charges and was wanted on an outstanding felony warrant for failure to appear in court.
“We’ve arrested him before,” Guidroz said. “He’s not someone to take lightly.”
Law enforcement officials are conducting an intensive search involving K9 units and drones to locate Miller, who is considered armed and dangerous. Investigators suspect Miller discarded a 9mm firearm during his escape and believe he is carrying drugs in a backpack.
If apprehended, Miller faces multiple charges including attempted murder of a police officer, aggravated assault and battery, illegal possession of drugs and weapons, and child endangerment. Additional charges may be added if the weapon is recovered on him.
Authorities urge the public to remain vigilant and report any sightings of Miller immediately but caution against approaching him.
“Do not approach this individual,” Sheriff Guidroz said. “Call 911 immediately.”
The investigation remains ongoing as officers continue their efforts to bring Miller into custody.
