Lafayette, LA — A 25-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run accident Friday evening on South Aymond Street (Highway 13), prompting a swift response from local authorities and emergency services.
The victim, identified as Darius Edwards of Eunice, was struck by a gray SUV around 5:30 p.m. on December 13 while riding an electric scooter. According to eyewitnesses, Edwards was traveling northbound in the center turn lane when the vehicle, which was heading southbound, passed other cars at a high rate of speed before hitting him. After the collision, the driver briefly stopped, but then continued driving without further assistance or contact.
Bystanders who witnessed the crash immediately began performing CPR on Edwards, who was found unresponsive in the roadway. Police arrived on scene shortly afterward and took over resuscitation efforts until Eunice Fire Department and EMS personnel arrived. Edwards was quickly transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Eunice Police investigators were able to locate the vehicle and its driver, who was taken into custody shortly after the incident. Authorities have not yet released the driver’s name or charges, but the arrest brings some measure of closure to a community shaken by the tragedy.
The crash remains under investigation, and police are asking anyone with additional information to come forward.
