LAFAYETTE, La. — A deadly house fire early Saturday morning has resulted in the death of a man and left a woman in critical condition. The fire, which broke out just before 12:30 a.m., occurred at a residence located on the 100 block of South Orange Street.

Upon arrival, the Lafayette Fire Department was met with heavy smoke coming from the home. Firefighters quickly entered the building and discovered two adult occupants in a bedroom. Both were transported to a nearby hospital, where 44-year-old Ronald Williams later succumbed to his injuries. The woman, whose identity has not been released, remains in critical condition.

In addition to the human casualties, the occupants’ dog perished in the fire.

Firefighters were able to contain the blaze, though the home sustained significant damage. The fire is believed to have originated in the kitchen, but authorities have not yet determined its exact cause. The Lafayette Fire Department has launched an investigation to determine what led to the deadly incident.

As the investigation continues, community members are left to mourn the tragic loss while hoping for the swift recovery of the surviving woman.
