Grand Jury Indicts Two in Connection with December 2024 Shooting Death of Kendrick Lewis

Lafayette, LA – A St. Landry Parish grand jury has indicted two individuals in connection with the fatal shooting of Kendrick Lewis, which occurred in December 2024. Marques Malik Sonnier, 19, and a 16-year-old juvenile have been charged with second-degree murder following the tragic incident.

The shooting took place on the evening of December 28, 2024, on Honey Lane in the town of St. Landry Parish. Lewis, who was struck by gunfire, later succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.

District Attorney Chad Pitre confirmed the indictments of Sonnier and the unnamed juvenile in a statement issued earlier this week. Sonnier, who was the fifth individual arrested in connection with the case, faces serious charges in relation to Lewis’ death. The investigation into the shooting involved multiple arrests and a thorough examination of evidence.

Earlier, the family of Kendrick Lewis spoke out following his death, describing the heartbreak and loss they have endured. Lewis’ mother, who was interviewed shortly after the incident, expressed grief and disbelief over the senseless violence that took her son’s life.

In addition to the charges in the Lewis case, the St. Landry Parish grand jury also handed down an indictment for Jakob Sedrick Oakley, 22, in a separate case. Oakley faces charges of first-degree rape and aggravated second-degree battery in relation to an October 2024 assault. The alleged victim, a woman from Lafayette, was found in the Lawtell area after reportedly being raped and beaten.

These developments mark a significant step in the pursuit of justice for the victims involved, though both cases remain ongoing as authorities continue their investigations.
