ST. LANDRY PARISH, La. — A major highway improvement project is currently underway in St. Landry and Evangeline parishes, aiming to enhance the condition of Highway 758 and improve traffic flow for local drivers. Spearheaded by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD), the $4.6 million project is focused on a 3.2-mile stretch of the highway, from Woodstone Road to LA 29.
The initiative is part of the state’s ongoing efforts to upgrade roadways across Louisiana. For many local residents, including Scarlet Mott, the need for improvements is clear. Mott, who purchased property in the area in 2019, has experienced firsthand the challenges posed by the deteriorating road conditions. She recalls the highway being full of potholes, though it was not as rough as it is today.
“This road has definitely seen better days,” said Mott, a longtime resident of the area. “It wasn’t terrible, but it did have potholes. Now, it’s a lot worse.”
The project will involve resurfacing the road with new asphalt, adding fresh road striping, and making other necessary improvements to ensure smoother and safer traffic flow. While these changes will ultimately benefit drivers, the ongoing construction will cause some short-term disruptions, including lane closures and slow-moving traffic.
DOTD has urged motorists to use caution while traveling through the construction zone. Temporary speed limit reductions and flaggers directing traffic will be in place to ensure the safety of both drivers and construction crews.
“People might get aggravated because we’re all spoiled back here,” Mott said, acknowledging the frustrations of local residents. However, she added, “We’re excited to see the finished product. It’s moving pretty quickly.”
Despite the temporary inconveniences, many locals are hopeful that the project will improve travel conditions for the long term. DOTD officials have emphasized that safety will remain a top priority throughout the construction phase.
“The roadwork is necessary, and we understand that the delays can be frustrating,” a DOTD spokesperson stated. “However, we urge drivers to reduce their speed and stay focused while driving through the area. This will help ensure the safety of both the crews and fellow motorists.”
The highway upgrade is expected to be completed by August, weather permitting. Until then, drivers are advised to plan for potential delays and exercise patience as construction continues.
