Hunter Rescued After Stranding in St. Mary Parish

by Lina Tarson

St. Mary Parish, LA – A hunter was rescued on January 21 after becoming stranded in the Atchafalaya Delta Wildlife Management Area (WMA) due to a mechanical issue with his vessel. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) received a distress call around 2 p.m. reporting that the hunter, who was duck hunting, had run out of gas on his way back in.

In response to the call, LDWF agents, along with deputies from the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office, quickly mobilized to the area. They located the stranded hunter and were able to transport him safely back to the boat launch using an LDWF patrol vessel. Fortunately, the hunter did not require any medical attention following the incident.

The hunter had been returning from his hunting trip when his boat’s fuel supply ran out. He reached out for help, and the coordinated rescue operation was successfully carried out.

This incident serves as a reminder to hunters and outdoor enthusiasts to be cautious during inclement weather, especially with the ongoing winter storm. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries urges the public to stay home, avoid unnecessary travel, and refrain from accessing WMAs at this time due to hazardous conditions.

LDWF agents involved in the rescue included Sgt. Jeremy Foret and Agent Savannah Lavergne.
