Lafayette High School Invites Community to Help Teachers Pack During Serve Day on May 17

LAFAYETTE, La. — With the move to a brand-new campus just weeks away, Lafayette High School is calling on the community to lend a hand during “Serve Day” on Friday, May 17, from 7 a.m. to noon.

The volunteer event, organized by the nonprofit Love Our Schools, is aimed at helping teachers pack up their classrooms as the school prepares for its long-awaited transition to a modern facility. Volunteers will assist with boxing up supplies, classroom decorations, and instructional materials across six buildings—allowing teachers to focus on closing out the school year.

“We want to make sure that we are adding sparkle and opportunity to our students and our teachers through these projects,” said Millicent Nugent, executive director of Love Our Schools. “This is going to make a huge impact and will take a lot of stress off teachers at the end of the school year.”

No heavy lifting or moving of furniture will be required. Organizers emphasize that anyone—individuals, families, businesses, or civic groups—can participate. No special skills or experience are needed.

“Come as you are,” Nugent said. “Just be ready to put in a little bit of work and help our teachers in their classrooms.”

The new Lafayette High School facility, the result of years of planning and investment by the Lafayette Parish School System, promises enhanced learning environments, improved safety features, and greater efficiency for both students and staff. Serve Day offers community members a tangible way to be part of this significant milestone.

Those interested in volunteering can find more information or sign up through Love Our Schools.
