LAFAYETTE, LA – As Lafayette braces for another round of freezing temperatures, the community is coming together to provide support for those who are most vulnerable. For many, the cold snap is more than just an inconvenience; it’s a serious threat to their safety and well-being. In response, local officials have opened a warming shelter at the George Dupuis Recreation Center to offer a safe refuge for those in need.
Tamela Thitpen, a resident who has been homeless in Lafayette for nearly 14 years, shared the emotional and physical toll of living without shelter during such harsh weather conditions. “It’s very hard out here. It’s stressful and emotional, and it takes a lot on a person,” Thitpen explained. Her words reflect the difficulties that many others in the area are facing as they try to survive the frigid temperatures.
The warming center, which opened its doors late Wednesday night, is part of the city’s response to the severe cold gripping Acadiana. Equipped with bedding and food, the George Dupuis Recreation Center is offering a warm, safe place to sleep for residents experiencing homelessness or for those who have inadequate heating in their homes.
“We are prepared to accommodate up to 175 people,” said Tim Sensley, Director of Parks, Art, Recreation, and Culture for the Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG). “We are setting up for 50 initially, and we will make accommodations based on need.”
In addition to providing shelter, local organizations are coming together to offer further support. Second Harvest Food Bank has partnered with the city to supply hot meals and other resources to those at the warming center. The outpouring of generosity extends beyond agencies as well, with community members donating clothes, blankets, and nonperishable food items to ensure everyone has what they need to stay warm.
Thitpen, who has found refuge at the center, expressed her gratitude. “We’re all grateful,” she said. “I don’t think you have to ask anybody in here—they all are appreciative, and we’re all grateful.”
The opening of the warming shelter and the collaborative effort between the city and local organizations serve as a reminder of the importance of community solidarity in times of need. As the cold snap continues, officials encourage residents to stay informed about available resources and to consider contributing in any way they can to help those struggling to stay safe and warm.
