Lafayette Parish School Board Approves Dress Code Changes, New Bell Schedules, and Teacher Pay Increases for 2025-26 School Year

LAFAYETTE, LA — During its Thursday night meeting, the Lafayette Parish School Board voted to approve several key updates for the 2025-26 school year, including changes to the student dress code, revised bell schedules, and a proposal for a teacher salary increase and incentive pay package.

One of the most notable changes is the update to the student dress code, which will now allow students across the Lafayette Parish School System (LPSS) to wear blue and black jeans. Previously, these colors were not permitted under the district’s policy. The change is expected to give students more options in their daily attire while maintaining a level of formality in the school environment.

In addition to the dress code update, the board also approved new bell schedules aimed at improving student safety and providing an earlier dismissal. LPSS Superintendent Francis Touchet shared that the goal of the new schedule is to have all school buses off the roads by 4:30 p.m., a move designed to reduce potential safety risks for both students and drivers. The revised schedule is part of the district’s ongoing efforts to enhance transportation efficiency and student well-being.

Another major decision came with the approval of a proposed teacher salary increase and performance-based incentives. Under the new plan, the starting salary for teachers will increase to $50,000. Additionally, certified teachers will see increased pay, and there will be performance-based incentives aimed at rewarding high-performing educators.

The proposal also includes stipends for club facilitators, acknowledging the extra responsibilities taken on by teachers who lead extracurricular activities. Superintendent Touchet announced that LPSS will host a series of meetings next week to provide more details about the salary and incentive plan, which is expected to positively impact teacher retention and recruitment.

“These changes reflect our commitment to providing a positive and supportive learning environment for both students and teachers,” Touchet said during the meeting.

The updates approved by the board are expected to have a significant impact on the LPSS community, and many are eager to see how these adjustments will shape the upcoming school year.
