LAFAYETTE PARISH, LA — Thursday marked the end of the academic year for thousands of students across Lafayette Parish, with several campuses closing their doors permanently as part of the school board’s district optimization plan.
While the closures bring mixed emotions, the arrival of summer means new opportunities for local youth to engage in enriching activities. Recognizing the need for safe and productive summer options, community leaders have launched programs aimed at supporting children throughout the break.
Retired teacher Joyce Gaymon is leading a volunteer-run summer camp at the MLK Recreation Center, designed to provide a welcoming space for children ages 5 to 13. Gaymon is working alongside District 1 City Council Member Elroy Broussard to create an affordable, accessible alternative to traditional summer camps, which can be cost-prohibitive or difficult to reach for many families.
“A lot of them can’t go anywhere or on vacation,” Broussard said. “So they need something to occupy their time, occupy their mind.”
The camp, scheduled to run from June 9 to July 18, will offer activities including arts, reading, music, and outdoor games. Hours of operation are from 7:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., accommodating families needing daytime care for their children.
Gaymon emphasized the importance of providing meaningful experiences beyond screen time. “We need to do more for our kids, besides letting them sit at home on the phone,” she said. “Take them on field trips, take them to the park, and let them get around positive activities.”
Despite strong community support, the program faces challenges, particularly in securing enough food to feed the participants. “The problem we’re having right now is food for the kids,” Gaymon said, urging residents to donate meals and drinks to keep the camp running smoothly.
The program hopes to serve up to 100 children and relies heavily on community contributions to maintain its daily operations.

As Lafayette Parish students transition from classrooms to summer break, efforts like these seek to ensure their months ahead are safe, fun, and full of opportunity.
