Lafayette Parish, La. – After an extensive search, Lafayette has appointed a new police chief, and it’s a familiar face to the community. Chief Paul Trouard, a 28-year veteran of the Lafayette Police Department, has officially stepped into the role after serving as interim chief for the past eight months.
Trouard, who has a deep understanding of the department and the community, spoke about the smooth transition into his new role. “The transition has been fairly smooth because I know the community, I know the people, and I know the officers,” he said. “I know the issues within the department, what works and what doesn’t. That allows me to problem-solve quickly.”
Now leading a department of 284 officers, Trouard has shared his vision for the future of the Lafayette Police Department, focusing on technology, community engagement, and departmental growth.
One of the key components of his plan is the incorporation of new technology. “We’re looking at getting drones on patrol, making sure our precinct commanders are out in the community, talking to people, and getting out of their offices,” Trouard explained. Additionally, he mentioned efforts to upgrade the department’s patrol fleet and radios, as well as build up the narcotics and patrol divisions. Trouard also announced plans to introduce a violence intervention program aimed at addressing issues of violent crime.
While these department-driven initiatives are a priority, Trouard stressed that tackling crime and ensuring public safety will require more than just internal changes. “My initiative over the next year is to strengthen and grow the department, ensuring we have the right resources and personnel,” he said. “A well-equipped, well-trained, and happy police department can reduce crime and work effectively with the public.”
The Lafayette Police Department is divided into five precincts, each overseen by a captain. These precincts serve as the first point of contact for residents regarding ongoing public safety issues. Trouard emphasized the importance of collaboration in addressing these concerns, particularly when responding to major incidents. “We need that collaboration,” he said. “When we have a major incident, we need people to provide us with the information to solve cases, like murders, or even address issues during Mardi Gras. We want to know what’s happening in neighborhoods so we can address their concerns.”
At the heart of Trouard’s strategy is a strong commitment to community engagement and building lasting relationships with residents. As he continues his tenure as chief, he remains focused on the importance of serving and protecting the Lafayette community, emphasizing that success in law enforcement comes from cooperation between the department and the people it serves.
With a well-established track record and a clear vision for the future, Chief Paul Trouard is poised to lead the Lafayette Police Department into the next chapter, ensuring a safer and more connected community.
