LAFAYETTE, LA – The Lafayette Police Department has concluded a five-week traffic enforcement campaign targeting red light violations, resulting in a total of 407 citations issued across the city.
The initiative, which wrapped up on Friday, focused on intersections identified by officers as high-violation areas based on prior enforcement experience and traffic data. According to the department, the weekly citation breakdown is as follows: 106 in Week 1, 80 in Week 2, 79 in Week 3, 45 in Week 4, and 97 in Week 5.
While the primary objective was to curb red light running, police noted that some drivers received citations for additional traffic violations during the course of the campaign.
Key intersections under heightened surveillance included Johnston Street and Ambassador Caffery Parkway; Kaliste Saloom Road at both Ambassador Caffery Parkway and East Pinhook Road; West Pinhook Road and Surrey Street; Cameron Street and University Avenue; Evangeline Thruway and Willow Street; and Louisiana Avenue and Willow Street.
In a statement released Monday, the department reaffirmed its commitment to traffic safety beyond the recent campaign.
“The Lafayette Police Department remains committed to traffic safety,” the statement read. “While this specific campaign has concluded, traffic officers will continue routine monitoring of intersections for red light violations.”
Police Chief Trouard has also directed the department’s Traffic Unit to proactively address traffic concerns throughout Lafayette, responding to community feedback and targeting areas where safety issues have been raised.
The department did not indicate when the next targeted traffic enforcement initiative may take place but emphasized that ongoing patrols and enforcement remain a priority.
