Louisiana Faces Rare Winter Weather: Governor Landry Issues Safety Warnings and Updates on Road Conditions

by Lina Tarson

Lafayette, La. — Louisiana is grappling with the most significant winter weather event in over a century as snow and ice continue to impact roadways and communities across the state. Governor Jeff Landry, alongside key state leaders, provided an update on the ongoing response to the severe conditions during a press conference Wednesday afternoon.

State Climatologist Jay Grymes, Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) officials, and Louisiana State Police Superintendent Colonel Robert Hodges joined Governor Landry to address the challenges posed by the winter storm. According to Grymes, the snowstorm marks a historic event for Louisiana, with the snowfall having ceased but freezing temperatures expected to persist through Thursday morning, keeping road conditions hazardous.

Governor Landry urged residents to remain cautious and take appropriate safety measures, particularly regarding heating devices. “Make sure you place the space heater on the floor and away from curtains, walls, or furniture,” Landry advised. “Don’t leave it unattended. Keep it away from water. When you go to bed at night, just unplug it.”

Road Closures and Reopening Efforts

The Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) is continuing its efforts to clear and treat the roads. Secretary Joe Donahue stated that crews are prioritizing key routes and major highways to ensure safety as conditions improve. Several major bridges are expected to reopen in the coming days:

  • The Basin Bridge and the Mississippi River Bridge in Baton Rouge are slated to reopen Thursday.
  • The Bonnet Carré Spillway and twin spans in New Orleans are expected to reopen by Friday.

In light of ongoing icy conditions, drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, as many roadways remain unsafe.

Crash Reports and Safety Alerts

Louisiana State Police Superintendent Colonel Robert Hodges reported more than 100 crashes across the state due to icy roads. Drivers are encouraged to use extreme caution and to stay updated on current road conditions by visiting 511la.org.

School and Office Closures

In response to the severe weather, many state and local government offices and schools will remain closed through Thursday. Residents are advised to check local updates for information regarding reopening schedules.

Stay Informed and Safe

As Louisiana continues to cope with this rare winter weather event, officials remind residents to stay informed through official channels and adhere to safety guidelines. With freezing temperatures expected to linger, caution is urged across the state to avoid unnecessary risks.
