Jeanerette, La. — The Jeanerette Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Wednesday afternoon in the 500 block of Henkle Street, marking the city’s latest homicide case.
According to Police Chief Terrance Moore, officers responded to a call at approximately 1:10 p.m. and discovered a man, believed to be around 40 years old, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
“We rendered aid, and he was transported for care,” Moore said. “Investigators have since been updated that he has succumbed to his injuries. This is now an active homicide investigation.”
The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
No suspect has been identified as of Wednesday evening, and authorities have not released any information regarding a potential motive or circumstances surrounding the shooting.
“It’s caused by another individual or individuals,” Moore added. “If you see something, say something. You might think it’s not important, but it could help lead to something we’re investigating.”
As a precaution, Henkle Street has been closed from Matthew B. Polk Street to Martin Luther King Drive while detectives continue to process the scene. Residents are being asked to avoid the area.
