LAFAYETTE PARISH, La. – One person is dead and several others are injured following a multi-vehicle crash early Monday morning on Interstate 10, according to the Louisiana State Police.
The incident occurred around 3 a.m., approximately one mile west of Louisiana Highway 93. Investigators say a Dodge Charger traveling westbound left the roadway for unknown reasons, crossed the median, and struck a guardrail before coming to a stop in the eastbound lanes.
Moments later, an eastbound passenger vehicle and a pickup truck collided with the disabled Charger. Two other vehicles struck debris scattered across the roadway, troopers said.
The driver of the Charger, who has not yet been identified pending notification of next of kin, was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities confirmed that the individual was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
The drivers of the other vehicles involved — including the pickup truck — were transported to local hospitals with moderate injuries. The pickup truck driver was also unrestrained, while the remaining individuals involved in the crash were properly restrained and did not report any injuries.
Toxicology samples were collected from the deceased and submitted for analysis as part of the ongoing investigation.
State Police continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash and urge all motorists to wear seat belts, remain alert, and drive responsibly.
