Rayne Man Arrested in Connection with Friday Night Drive-By Shooting

by Lina Tarson

Lafayette, LA — A 35-year-old man from Rayne has been arrested following a shooting on Osage Trail Road Friday night, authorities announced. Michael James Mouton was taken into custody by the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office and faces multiple serious charges, including attempted first-degree murder, assault by a drive-by shooting, aggravated criminal damage to property, and illegal use of a dangerous weapon.

According to a statement from the sheriff’s office, Mouton is accused of firing several shots at a residence, which was occupied by multiple individuals at the time. The shooting took place in what investigators believe was an act of retaliation related to Mouton’s estranged relationship with one of the residents.

“During the investigation, it was determined that Mouton, who is the estranged boyfriend of one of the residents, fired multiple rounds at the house before fleeing the scene,” the sheriff’s office said in a press release. “Fortunately, no one inside the residence was injured.”

The bullets struck the home, causing damage to the property, but authorities confirmed that none of the occupants were hit by gunfire. The incident, which occurred late Friday evening, has left the local community shaken.

Mouton was arrested without incident and remains in custody, facing the serious charges. His bond amount has not been disclosed at this time.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have stated that they are working to gather further details on the shooting. Local residents are being urged to report any additional information that may assist in the case.

As of now, there has been no indication of a motive beyond the alleged personal conflict between Mouton and the victim. However, officials have emphasized that domestic violence-related incidents can often escalate into more dangerous situations, as was seen in this case.

The sheriff’s office has also expressed relief that no one was injured in the shooting, but emphasized that such incidents remain a serious concern for public safety.

The case highlights the continuing issue of gun violence and the potential dangers posed by unresolved domestic disputes.
