LAFAYETTE, La. — A school resource officer successfully extinguished a small fire in the bathroom at Alice Boucher Elementary School on Wednesday afternoon, preventing further damage to the building.

The Lafayette Fire Department was called to the scene around 2:50 p.m. after school officials reported the fire to 911. As a precautionary measure, the school was temporarily evacuated. A school resource officer with the Lafayette Sheriff’s Department responded promptly and managed to put out the flames, limiting damage to the facility.

Firefighters arrived at the school shortly afterward and discovered a partially burnt clothing item in one of the bathroom stalls. They also noted minor soot and smoke damage within the restroom. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the situation was quickly contained.

The Lafayette Fire Department is continuing to investigate the cause of the fire, but no further details have been released at this time.

Authorities are praising the quick action of the school resource officer, who played a critical role in preventing a potentially more serious situation.
