ST. MARTIN PARISH, La. — Drivers traveling on the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge this Sunday and Monday should expect to see crews actively working to pretreat the bridge in preparation for potential winter weather, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LDOTD) announced.
The department emphasized that bridges and overpasses are particularly vulnerable to icy conditions, often freezing faster than surface roadways during winter weather events. To prevent hazardous driving conditions, the LDOTD is taking precautionary steps to treat the bridge ahead of expected cold temperatures.
In 2024, the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge was closed temporarily due to icy conditions, highlighting the importance of such preventive measures. Drivers are urged to remain cautious while passing through the area, as road conditions may change rapidly during cold spells.
Motorists are encouraged to stay informed about weather updates and be aware of any changes in traffic patterns or delays while crews perform the pretreatment work.
