LAFAYETTE PARISH — A kitchen fire at The Meadows West Apartments on Monday afternoon resulted in minor injuries and significant property damage.

Firefighters were dispatched to 201 High Meadows Blvd. around 4:20 p.m. after reports of smoke emanating from one of the apartment units. Upon arrival, responders observed the unit’s sole occupant exiting the residence.

Crews quickly entered the apartment and located the fire in the kitchen area. The blaze was brought under control within 10 minutes. Officials reported that the kitchen sustained heavy fire and water damage, while smoke damage was evident throughout the rest of the unit. Additionally, the adjoining apartment suffered minor smoke and water damage.

Investigators determined the cause of the fire to be unattended cooking. The occupant reportedly fell asleep while cooking and was later awakened by the smoke alarm. In an attempt to extinguish the flames, he suffered burns to his hands. He was transported by Acadian Ambulance to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Fire officials ruled the fire accidental and urged residents to remain vigilant when cooking to prevent similar incidents.
