Lafayette, LA – On December 26th, the Lafayette Police Department responded to a report of vandalism at the Graham Brown Memorial Park, where an individual damaged a concession stand door. The park, which is currently under construction as part of a $15 million development project, has become the subject of concern for local residents and officials after this incident.
The damage was swiftly repaired, but the event has raised questions about the park’s security, particularly as it is still a month away from opening. The park is intended to be a significant asset to the Northside community, with officials hopeful it will provide a much-needed recreational space for residents. Despite the early setback, local leaders are working to ensure that the park will be well-protected moving forward.
“We were a little taken back that someone would want to vandalize the park,” said a representative from the Lafayette Consolidated Government. In response to the incident, authorities have already installed a portable camera system within the park. Discussions are underway with Marshall Reggie Thomas, who oversees park security, to increase surveillance and security personnel starting next month. “We are taking the necessary steps to protect this asset,” the representative added.
The park’s anticipated opening is set for late January, and even more camera surveillance is planned to ensure the safety of the space. Sensley, a local official, emphasized that despite the vandalism, the community’s excitement for the park remains strong. “This is just a bump in the road,” he said. “The glass has already been repaired, and we’re looking forward to delivering a quality product to the community in the next month.”
Local residents, including mother and daughter duo Charperry and Stevieanya Mamou, expressed their disappointment over the crime, but also their continued excitement for the park’s eventual opening. “It’s for everyone to enjoy—our kids, our grandkids,” said Charperry Mamou. “It’s a beautiful surrounding, and I just can’t wait for it to open.”
Stevieanya Mamou echoed her mother’s sentiments, saying, “My first reaction was like, that’s crazy because it’s not even open yet.” Both women, however, remain hopeful that the park will soon be a place for the community to gather and enjoy, despite this early act of vandalism.
The damage to the concession stand is seen by officials as an isolated incident, and they are committed to ensuring that it does not deter the park’s development. As final touches are added and security measures are bolstered, the city is focused on completing the park on schedule.
Anyone with information regarding the vandalism is encouraged to contact the Lafayette Police Department or Lafayette Crime Stoppers at (337) 232-TIPS (8477). All calls will remain anonymous.
