Lafayette, LA – As freezing temperatures are forecast to impact Acadiana in the coming days, local governments are taking action to ensure residents have a safe place to stay warm.
St. Landry Parish Government has announced that a warming shelter will open at the former Indian Hills Country Club in Opelousas. The shelter, located at 1141 E. Prudhomme Street, will open Sunday at 5 p.m. and remain available until Thursday at 9 a.m. Authorities have emphasized that no meals will be provided at the shelter, urging visitors to bring their own food, as well as blankets, pillows, and other necessary items. They also noted that space will be limited.
In addition to the St. Landry Parish shelter, Lafayette Consolidated Government has confirmed it will open a warming center at the Dupuis Recreation Center on Pont Des Mouton. While the exact opening time for Lafayette’s shelter has not yet been confirmed, officials plan to make the shelter available in response to the sub-freezing temperatures expected next week.
Both shelters are part of efforts by local governments to ensure the safety and well-being of residents during the extreme cold snap. Authorities encourage everyone in need of shelter to take advantage of these facilities, but they are reminded to bring necessary supplies, as food and other services will not be provided.
As the cold weather continues to approach, officials are advising residents to stay updated on local shelter openings and to take precautions to stay warm during the extreme conditions.
