Weekend Closure of I-49 Northbound in Lafayette for Bridge Repairs

by Lina Tarson

LAFAYETTE, La. — Motorists planning to travel north from Lafayette this weekend on Interstate 49 may face delays due to a full closure of the northbound lanes at the I-10 interchange. The closure, announced by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD), will begin at 9 p.m. on Friday, February 7, and will last until 5 a.m. on Monday, February 10.

The closure is necessary for repairs to the I-10 eastbound overpass, which was damaged in a truck accident in December. The collision caused significant damage to the exterior girder on the eastbound bridge deck, prompting the need for immediate repairs. DOTD officials have stated that the project will involve the removal of the damaged girder and the installation of a new one using a crane.

Over the following weeks, crews will also fabricate and install a new bridge deck once the new girder is in place. The DOTD has advised motorists to adjust their travel plans, as the closure is expected to cause disruptions to traffic flow along this busy corridor.

Drivers are urged to take alternate routes or leave earlier to avoid delays. Any further lane or road closures related to the project will be communicated by DOTD as necessary.

For more updates, motorists can monitor DOTD’s official channels.
