LAFAYETTE PARISH, LA — As the excitement builds for Festival International, Downtown Lafayette is preparing to roll out a new initiative aimed at enhancing the city’s bustling core. The Downtown Ambassador Program, set to launch in conjunction with the popular cultural celebration, promises to improve the overall experience for both locals and visitors.
After five months of planning, the program will be managed by Block by Block, a Louisville, Kentucky-based organization known for its successful ambassador initiatives in cities across the country. The company has already hired an operations manager and is in the process of finalizing a four-person team that will be on the ground seven days a week.
The ambassadors’ roles will go beyond simple customer service. They will be tasked with keeping the area clean, removing graffiti, and assisting tourists with navigation—whether it’s pointing out nearby restaurants or providing a safe escort back to their cars.
Kevin Blanchard, CEO of Downtown Lafayette Unlimited, expressed his enthusiasm for the program, noting that the presence of ambassadors will significantly enhance the downtown experience. “There’s going to be four folks on the ground, seven days a week, just being a friendly face,” Blanchard said. “This program is a game-changer, and it’s a perfect time to launch it with the influx of visitors expected for Festival International.”
The program is designed to meet the growing demands of downtown Lafayette, which has become a hub for lively events, dining, and shopping. With the increasing number of tourists and locals flocking to the area, maintaining a clean and welcoming environment is essential. The ambassadors will be instrumental in creating a positive and safe atmosphere, which local business owners are eager to see.
The Downtown Development Authority is funding the initiative, with an annual budget of approximately $375,000. Blanchard will receive monthly reports on the program’s progress and its impact on downtown Lafayette.
Alongside the Ambassador Program, the city is also working on a long-term site development plan, which officials hope to finalize by the fall. Block by Block’s extensive experience with similar programs is expected to bring a wealth of knowledge and proven strategies to the Lafayette community.
As preparations for Festival International continue, the Downtown Ambassador Program is set to become a key feature in the city’s ongoing effort to create a vibrant, safe, and welcoming environment for all who visit.
