VERMILION PARISH, LA — A tragic house fire early Monday morning claimed the lives of an elderly couple in Vermilion Parish, authorities confirmed.
The fire broke out around 5 a.m. on June 2, 2025, at a residence located in the 16000 block of Tan Road in Kaplan. Firefighters from the Indian Bayou Volunteer Fire Department responded promptly to the emergency call.
Upon arrival, responders discovered an 80-year-old man and his 78-year-old wife deceased inside the home. The State Fire Marshal’s Office has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the blaze, which remains undetermined at this time.
It is currently unknown whether the home was equipped with a working smoke alarm, a critical device that can save lives during residential fires.
The Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office urges residents to ensure their homes have functioning smoke alarms. Through its Operation Save-A-Life program, the agency provides free smoke alarm installations to residents in need.
